A group of Hiram College sport management students recently had the rare opportunity to step "inside the ropes" at the Ryder Cup, one of golf's most prestigious international tournaments. During the competition days, students were stationed at various holes throughout the course, where they learned and used hand signals to communicate with broadcast teams-indicating where golfers' shots had landed. Their observations helped update live television coverage and online platforms in real time. Students also supported greenside marshals by assisting with crowd control when shots veered into the gallery, providing them a front-row look at how major sporting events operate behind the scenes. "This experience can impact students' education at Hiram in many ways," said Dr. White, assistant professor of sport management. "The first-hand experiences these students have gained will provide numerous examples to draw on in nearly any course within the sport management curriculum. We intentionally structure discussions and reflections to connect these experiences to classroom learning. It not only helps students understand new material but also encourages them to think critically and creatively about how concepts are applied in real-world settings. Combining a COSMA-accredited degree with experiences like this positions our graduates for great success after Hiram." For students, the experience was as thrilling as it was educational. "There were so many exciting parts of the experience that it's hard to choose just one!" shared Aidan Griffin '26, one of the student volunteers. "Some of the highlights included getting autographs from Bryson DeChambeau, Collin Morikawa, and Justin Thomas, meeting YouTubers GoodGood Golf and Handshake Bets, and watching Team USA nearly stage an incredible comeback. It was an unforgettable experience filled with nonstop excitement from start to finish." Beyond the excitement, students walked away with invaluable professional growth. "Working at such a large international event taught me how to communicate effectively, adapt quickly, and stay organized under pressure," Griffin said. "It gave me insight into how large-scale sporting events are managed and strengthened my teamwork and leadership skills. Overall, volunteering at the Ryder Cup prepared me to handle responsibility and work confidently in any fast-paced environment."

Hiram College hosted its annual Nursing Uniform Convocation to honor sophomore Bachelor of Science in nursing students as they begin their clinical rotations. The celebration acknowledges each student's commitment to serving others through their career in professional nursing. Students received their uniforms, a nursing pin, and shared their pledges of commitment to the practice.

As Hiram College's earliest and most festive tradition, Sugar Day continues to demonstrate scholarship, showcasing students' work, research, presentations, and academia. On April 4, 2024, the College celebrated another eventful Sugar Day, welcoming over 150 student presenters representing campus, with 17 events including musical and theatre performances, oral presentations, poster sessions, and a conference social. Sugar Day is organized by the Office of Scholarly Endeavors, a primary supporter and celebrator of student research, scholarship, and creative inquiry across the College's many disciples and majors. The Office houses multiple, non-departmental, specific initiatives and programs that feature significant student research components or emphasis. It also aims to help faculty and staff integrate student research into their own on-going scholarship.

The Lindsay-Crane Center for Writing & Literature has declared its Fall 2022 Creative Nonfiction Contest winners! Hiram's creative nonfiction contest has been offered for over 20 years. Creative nonfiction is "Factual and literary writing that has the narrative, dramatic, meditative, and lyrical elements of novels, plays, poetry, and memoirs," as defined by the Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP).

Hiram's annual Celebration of Excellence commemorates the academic achievements of our students, their service to the College, and dedication to the larger community. The accomplishments recognized encompass every part of campus life and signify the positive and lasting impact these students have made on the College.

Eight Hiram College photography students presented their work in the 2022 Cleveland Photo Festival, which opened Friday, November 18, 2022, at the Bostwick Design Initiative galleries in Cleveland, OH.

Each fall, Hiram's Burton D. Morgan Center for Integrated Entrepreneurship hosts ideablitz, an opportunity where students get to creatively pitch their ideas for a new business or service. This year, seven teams participated and marketed their idea to a panel of select judges consisting of business owners and entrepreneurs.

Every year, Hiram College celebrates student leaders and campus community members for their work and effort to foster a vibrant campus. The Office of Campus Involvement is excited to announce the recipients of a new award this year, the Top Terrier Award, given to students, faculty, and staff for their positive and lasting impact on the College. The Top Terrier Award is given to 20 students based on their impact in the classroom, on the field, or across campus. Recipients demonstrate the College's core values of Diversity, Innovation, Community, Learning, and Responsibility through all that they do.
